SERA open press is committed to the long-term preservation and accessibility of all published scholarly content. We recognize that the permanence of the academic record is a fundamental responsibility of any publisher, and we take active steps to ensure that published research remains available indefinitely.
Preservation Strategy
PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN)
SERA open press uses the PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN) as its primary digital preservation partner. PKP PN is a dark archive built on the LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) technology, specifically designed for journals using Open Journal Systems (OJS).
Through PKP PN:
- Published content is automatically deposited into a distributed preservation network
- Multiple copies are maintained across geographically distributed nodes
- Content is preserved independently of SERA open press infrastructure
- Preserved content becomes accessible if the original publisher ceases operations
Crossref DOI Registration
All articles published by SERA open press receive a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) registered with Crossref. DOIs provide:
- A permanent, resolvable link to each published article
- Integration with global scholarly infrastructure (citation linking, metadata indexing, ORCID)
- Persistent identification regardless of changes to website URLs or platform technology
Future Preservation Plans
As SERA open press grows, we plan to explore additional preservation partnerships, including:
- CLOCKSS (Controlled LOCKSS) — a community-governed dark archive
- Portico — a digital preservation service for scholarly content
- National library deposit programs where applicable
What Happens If SERA open press Ceases Operations
In the unlikely event that SERA open press ceases to operate:
- All published content preserved through PKP PN will be triggered for open access — meaning it becomes freely available through the preservation network even though the original publisher's website is no longer active
- DOIs registered with Crossref will continue to resolve, and metadata will remain in the Crossref registry
- We will make reasonable efforts to transfer journal titles and content to another publisher or repository to ensure continuity of publication
Access to Published Content
All published articles are immediately and permanently available as open access on the SERA open press website. There are no embargo periods, subscription fees, or access restrictions of any kind. See our Open Access Policy for details.
Archiving by Authors and Institutions
Authors and their institutions are free to archive and deposit published articles (the Version of Record) in institutional repositories, subject repositories, or personal websites at any time, with no embargo. See our Open Access Policy for self-archiving rights.
